Assam: Nagaon administration launches major eviction drive to reclaim encroached wetlands in Dhing
The Nagaon district administration on Tuesday launched a large-scale eviction drive in Dhing to reclaim nearly 2,000 bighas of encroached wetland areas, marking one of the most extensive anti-encroachment operations in the region in recent times.
According to official sources, the operation is primarily aimed at clearing illegal occupations from three major beels under the Dhing Revenue Circle. The eviction drive is part of a broader administrative initiative to recover government land and restore ecologically significant wetlands that have been gradually encroached upon over the years.
To ensure the smooth and secure conduct of the operation, the administration has deployed large contingents of police and paramilitary forces, with security camps established at three strategic locations across Dhing. Authorities said the security arrangements were made in advance to prevent any law-and-order issues during the eviction process.
The eviction is being carried out in multiple localities, including Salmabori, Bherbheri Beel, Tuktuki, Ahom Gaon, Kathaguri, Roumari Beel, Maira Dhaj, and Magurmari Beel. The drive began at 9 am on Tuesday, following the completion of all preparatory measures, officials confirmed.
The district administration has scheduled the operation to be conducted in phases over four days—December 16, 17, 19 and 20—to systematically clear the encroached areas.
Speaking to the media, the Circle Officer of Dhing said the eviction drive is being undertaken to reclaim government-owned land and to facilitate the restoration of natural wetlands, which play a critical role in flood mitigation and ecological balance in the region.
Authorities reiterated that the drive would continue as planned and urged public cooperation to ensure its successful completion.
