Continuous torrential rainfall has resulted in severe waterlogging across large parts of Silchar, Assam causing artificial flooding and leaving nearly 60 per cent of urban residents stranded inside their homes. The monsoon downpour has led to the Barak River breaching the danger mark, aggravating the situation in low-lying and densely populated areas.
In the midst of this urban deluge, senior citizens have been among the most vulnerable, as many find it difficult or impossible to evacuate on their own. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been actively conducting rescue operations, prioritizing the elderly and infirm.
One such rescue was carried out on Public School Road, where NDRF personnel evacuated 75-year-old Pushpa Das from her flooded residence. Das, who has been suffering from chronic illness, was trapped in her home as floodwaters rose rapidly. Her family, overwhelmed by the sudden inundation, alerted local residents who, in turn, contacted the NDRF.
Responding swiftly, the NDRF team arrived at the site and used a lifeboat to transport Das safely to a relief center in Sribhumi. The incident was captured on video and has drawn praise from locals for the team’s efficiency and compassion.
Residents of Public School Road and the family of Pushpa Das expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the NDRF for their timely intervention during a moment of crisis. Meanwhile, water continues to remain stagnant across many parts of the city, prompting calls for better flood management and drainage systems in the region.
