Assam: New Kamrup District Rabha Students’ Union Committee takes charge after oath ceremony
The newly constituted Kamrup District Rabha Students’ Union formally assumed charge on Sunday, January 11 following a solemn oath-taking ceremony held at Jananeta Sabyasachi Rabha Khetra. The event marked the formation of a full-fledged district committee, underscoring renewed momentum in the community’s socio-political mobilisation.
The oath-taking was conducted entirely in the Rabha language through a three-tier arrangement, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to preserving cultural identity and grassroots democratic practices. The president and general secretary of the district unit were administered the oath by All Rabha Students’ Union (ARSU) president Motilal Rabha, while ARSU vice-president Pradip Rabha administered the oath to executive committee members. The general members were sworn in by ARSU general secretary Dr. Subhash Rabha.
The newly formed Kamrup District committee comprises Anand Rabha as president, Ashok Nongbag as general secretary, Namal Kumar Rabha as vice-president, and Ankur Rabha, Niranjan Rabha, Arbinda Rabha and Utpal Rabha as assistant secretaries. Representatives from various regional committees across the district have been included, and the ARSU leadership has entrusted the committee with organisational responsibility for a two-year term.
Addressing the gathering, ARSU president Motilal Rabha recalled the tripartite meeting held in New Delhi on December 25, which was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Tankeswar Rabha, along with a delegation of community leaders. He stated that the meeting, which lasted nearly 20 minutes, resulted in an assurance that a mediator committee would be constituted within January to expedite the process of bringing the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Motilal Rabha further emphasised that Goalpara district, which falls under the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, has remained vulnerable to illegal migration, and inclusion under the Sixth Schedule would provide permanent constitutional safeguards by sealing such entry routes.
The programme was attended by leaders and representatives of the Gorkha Kalyan Parishad, Bengali Youth Federation, Gorkha Students’ Union, along with several prominent personalities from the region, highlighting inter-community solidarity.
In his concluding address, newly elected president Anand Rabha assured that the district unit would function in close coordination with the local populace, actively seeking public guidance and cooperation. He also stated that since the Rabha Students’ Union is an integral part of the Rabha Hasong Joint Movement Committee, the organisation has called for projecting local Rabha struggle candidates from Boko-Chaygaon and Palashbari constituencies in the forthcoming Assembly elections.
