Assam: Newborn girl found abandoned behind house, rescued by police in Ledo

A newborn girl was discovered abandoned in No. 2 Kolpara village of Ledo, Assam, early August 28, prompting police intervention and raising questions about societal values in the region.

Samir Das, a local resident, heard crying sounds behind his house and found the infant lying on the ground. He immediately alerted neighbours, who gathered at the scene before informing authorities.

Ledo police responded quickly to the call, rescuing the child and arranging for her immediate transfer to medical facilities. Dr Sanat Kumar Dutta, Deputy Superintendent of Margherita Civil Hospital/FRU, conducted a preliminary examination and confirmed the newborn is in stable condition.

The incident has shaken the local community in the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly constituency. Residents expressed concern about what drives someone to abandon a newborn child in such circumstances.

"This reflects deeper issues in our society," said community members who witnessed the rescue operation. The abandonment highlights ongoing challenges related to social stigma and support systems for vulnerable mothers.

The Margherita Co-District administration has launched an investigation into the case. Officials are working to trace the circumstances that led to the abandonment while ensuring the infant receives proper medical care and protection.

The baby remains under medical supervision at the hospital, where staff continue monitoring her condition. Child welfare authorities are expected to determine next steps for the infant's care and protection.

Local police are treating this as a serious case of child abandonment and are conducting inquiries in the surrounding areas to understand how the situation developed.
