Assam: NHAI sets one-month deadline to fix damaged NH-27 stretches in Dima Hasao

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has assured the North Cachar Autonomous Council (NCHAC) that repair work on the NH-27 East-West Corridor in Dima Hasao will be completed within a month, following complaints from residents over the condition of the highway.

NCHAC Chief Executive Member Debolal Garlosa chaired a review meeting with NHAI officials at the CEM Conference Hall in Haflong to discuss the road-related concerns.

The meeting focused on several issues raised by residents, including damaged stretches of NH-27, potholes inside the Maibang tunnel, ongoing highway construction at Harangajao and pending compensation related to land acquisition.

NHAI Project Director-in-charge Tushar Biswas said the immediate repair work would be completed within one month. He also assured the council that the ongoing construction of the highway would be completed within five months.

The NH-27 forms part of the East-West Corridor, a major highway project conceived during the tenure of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to connect Silchar in southern Assam with Saurashtra in Gujarat.

Vajpayee announced the project on October 10, 1998. The foundation stone was laid in 2004, with the approximately 3,300-kilometre Silchar-Saurashtra corridor initially targeted for completion by 2007.
