Assam: NSUI calls for education minister’s resignation over NEET UG 2026 controversy

The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged protests in Guwahati on Sunday, May 24 following the cancellation of the NEET UG 2026 medical entrance examination amid allegations of a widespread paper leak.

NSUI workers and students gathered in the city demanding accountability from the Centre over the alleged irregularities in the conduct of the examination. The protest was led by NSUI National President Vinod Jakhar, who accused the BJP-led government of failing to safeguard the integrity of the examination process.

Addressing the protesters, Jakhar alleged that the paper leak was part of a “well-planned conspiracy” and questioned the government’s handling of the matter. He further claimed that students across the country had suffered due to repeated examination-related controversies.

“The youth of this country are demanding answers from the BJP government for the way it is colluding with the paper mafia to leak the paper,” Jakhar said during the protest.

He also questioned why Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had not resigned following the controversy and stated that the NSUI would continue its agitation until action was taken.

Jakhar further said that NSUI workers had mobilised students across the country to raise their concerns regarding the examination system and alleged irregularities in recruitment and entrance examinations.

The cancellation of NEET UG 2026 has triggered protests and political reactions in several parts of the country, with student organisations demanding a transparent investigation into the alleged paper leak and stricter safeguards for national-level examinations.
