The Sribhumi Municipality has sparked a political controversy after being accused of conducting a selective eviction drive aimed primarily at small vendors, while allegedly turning a blind eye to larger commercial establishments violating the same civic norms.
The eviction operation, reportedly undertaken to decongest traffic in the city, has drawn criticism for singling out petty traders. In stark contrast, Vishal Megamart, a major retail outlet situated near the heavily trafficked AOC point, has been continuously operating with vehicles parked in clearly marked no-parking zones—a violation that remains unchecked by the municipal authorities.
Despite repeated public grievances, no action has been taken against the megastore, raising serious concerns over municipal impartiality and enforcement integrity.
Expressing strong dissatisfaction, Shubhajit Chakraborty, General Secretary of the Assam State NSUI, condemned the municipality’s approach. “Is there a covert arrangement between Sribhumi Municipality and Vishal Megamart's owner?” he asked. “Why are eviction drives always directed at small vendors while larger violators continue unchecked?”
Chakraborty also appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and local legislator Krishnendu Paul to intervene and ensure fair and transparent action across all sections of the commercial community.
