Assam observes 109th death anniversary of Garo leader Sonaram R. Sangma

Assam paid tribute to Sonaram R Sangma, the first political leader from the Garo community, on his 109th death anniversary on August 27.

The day-long event, organised by the Sonaram R Sangma Memorial Trust Society in partnership with the Garo Students’ Union, highlighted Sangma’s role as a pioneer of Garo political representation.

Assam Education Minister and Minister for the Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, led the homage by offering floral tributes at Sangma’s statue. During the ceremony, Dr Pegu laid the foundation stone for a new auditorium in Sangma’s memory, funded by the State’s Department of Tribal Welfare at an estimated cost of Rs 1 crore.

The programme drew prominent attendees, including Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr Numal Momin, Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Tankeswar Rabha, former MLA Dipak Kumar Rabha, and several leaders of Garo socio-political organisations.
