Assam: One killed, another critically injured in wild elephant attack in Samaguri
A fresh incident of human-elephant conflict has once again triggered panic in Samaguri after a wild elephant attack left one person dead and another critically injured on May 14.
According to local sources, the incident took place in the Bajiyagaon area of Samaguri where residents have been facing growing fear due to frequent movement of wild elephants in nearby villages and agricultural fields.
The deceased has been identified as Shariful Islam, while the injured person has been identified as Pranab Das.
Reports said Shariful Islam was working in a vegetable cultivation field when a wild elephant suddenly attacked him. The attack proved fatal and he died on the spot before locals could rescue him.
Meanwhile, Pranab Das reportedly sustained serious injuries while attempting to chase the elephant away from the locality in an effort to protect nearby residents and farmlands. The elephant allegedly turned aggressive and attacked him during the attempt.
The injured person was immediately rushed for medical treatment and is currently undergoing treatment in critical condition, sources said.
The incident has created fear and tension among villagers in the Samaguri region, where repeated elephant intrusions have become a major concern in recent months. Residents alleged that wild elephants frequently enter human settlements and agricultural fields in search of food, damaging crops and threatening lives.
Locals have urged the Forest Department to take immediate and effective measures to control the movement of wild elephants in densely populated areas and prevent further casualties.
The latest incident comes amid a rising number of human-elephant conflict cases reported from different parts of Assam, particularly during the monsoon and cultivation season when elephants often stray into villages from nearby forest areas.
