Assam: Over 20 illegal Bangladeshi migrants detained by locals in Cachar, foil escape bid

A group of approximately 18 to 20 Bangladeshi nationals was apprehended late last night, May 27 by vigilant locals in the Jalalpur area under the West Katigora constituency of Cachar district, Assam.

According to preliminary reports, the individuals had illegally crossed the Indo-Bangladesh border via the Jessore-Benapole route and initially entered West Bengal. From there, with the alleged help of Indian brokers, they managed to acquire Aadhaar cards and subsequently travelled to Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The group was intercepted again while reportedly attempting to return to Bangladesh with the assistance of the same or related brokers. During the operation, five autorickshaws used for transportation were seized. The accused, upon interrogation, revealed that the autos were owned by individuals residing in Bhangarpada.

All detainees were first brought to Gumrah police station and later shifted to Silchar Sadar police station for overnight questioning. Assam Police is currently continuing its investigation into the incident, focusing on the possible human trafficking network, Aadhaar card misuse, and cross-border infiltration routes.

Authorities are also examining the involvement of local intermediaries and verifying the authenticity of the seized documents and vehicles. Further legal proceedings are underway.
