Assam: Pabitra Margherita backs land rights for tea garden workers, tribal status to six communities
Union Minister Pabitra Margherita on November 30 lauded Assam government' decision to grant land rights to tea garden workers and tribal status to six Assamese communities. He called for collective support to successfully implement these long-standing public demands.
Addressing the media on the sideline of inaugurating the Tinsukia District Journalists' Association office at Borguri, Tinsukia district, Assam, Pabitra Margherita said, "After 200 years, the tea garden workers who have been since the British Raj enduring years of neglect, suppression will now become owners of land which is rightfully there's. Thanks to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma led BJP Government in Assam that have fulfilled the dream and struggle of the tea garden workers. Over 3 lakh workers will now benefit from this decision. Apart from this, another good news is that the six communities of Assam will now get the ST status".
The Tinsukia District Journalists’ Association celebrated a major milestone on Sunday, November 30 with the inauguration of its newly constructed office building at Borguri, coinciding with its 51st Foundation Day. The new infrastructure has been built at a cost of Rs 25 lakh, funded through the MP Local Area Development Fund of Union Minister and Rajya Sabha MP Pabitra Margherita.
The day-long programme began with a ceremonial ritual followed by the hoisting of the association’s flag by District President Dr. Rishi Das. Senior journalist Himen Bhattacharyya led a tribute ceremony in remembrance of departed members of the fraternity.
A special homage event dedicated to the legendary cultural icons Sudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika and popular singer Zubeen Garg was formally opened by senior journalist Amulya Khataniar with the traditional lighting of the lamp.
Union Minister Pabitra Margherita officially inaugurated the new office building in the presence of several prominent dignitaries, including Tinsukia Zilla Parishad President Bhadeshwar Moran, retired ADC Yogesh Barua, Tinsukia Municipal Board Chairman Pulak Chetia, and Motok Development Council Chairman Saroj Gohain.
To commemorate its 51st Foundation Day, the association also organized an interactive session fostering dialogue between senior and budding journalists, highlighting the crucial role of the media in strengthening democratic values.
