Assam panchayat polls: NDA sweeps all 4 Zila Parishad seats in Chhaygaon

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), comprising the BJP, AGP, and Rabha Hasong Joint Forum, registered a clean sweep in the Chhaygaon Assembly segment by securing all four Zila Parishad constituencies in the second phase of the Assam Panchayat elections.

The counting of votes, held on May 11 at South Kamrup Sowali College, confirmed the NDA’s dominance in the Boko-Chaygaon region. Kanmoni Rabha clinched a decisive victory in the 5 No. Bongao Zila Parishad constituency with a commanding margin of 20,911 votes. In 6 No. Nagarbera-Samaria Satra, Prahlad Biswas emerged victorious by nearly 7,500 votes.

Kombu Ram Rabha, contesting for the second consecutive term, retained his stronghold in the 7 No. Boko constituency with an impressive margin of approximately 18,000 votes. Meanwhile, in 8 No. Bekeli, Devjyoti Rabha, supported jointly by the Rabha Hasong Joint Forum, AGP, and BJP, was declared elected unopposed, further solidifying the alliance’s control in the area.

Celebrations erupted in Boko on Monday as leaders of the Rabha Hasong Joint Forum, including Sumit Rabha, Nagarmal Swargiary, Aditya Rabha, and Arjun Chetri, felicitated the victorious candidates at the Zila Parishad, Anchalik Panchayat, and ward levels. The winners were greeted with traditional sweets and adorned with gamochas as a mark of respect.

Sumit Rabha, who also serves as a member of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, expressed gratitude to the electorate for their overwhelming support. He highlighted that most candidates backed by the Rabha Hasong Joint Forum succeeded in the polls and pledged to form Panchayats that are "clean, strong, and transparent."

Rabha further assured that the newly elected Panchayat bodies will prioritize essential development projects and work towards resolving pressing public issues to ensure sustained welfare and progress in the region.
