Assam: Patient carried on makeshift cot in Sonaipar, tall claims of 'massive development' exposed

In a stark reminder of the infrastructural challenges that still persist in parts of Assam, a critically ill patient had to be carried on a makeshift cot tied with ropes through muddy, waterlogged roads in Sonaipar village under Sribhumi district. The patient, identified as Sushil Dutta, had no option but to be transported this way due to the complete absence of a motorable road leading to the nearest medical facility.

The recent monsoon rains have rendered the village roads virtually impassable, exposing the fragile state of rural infrastructure and the glaring gap between developmental claims and ground reality.

Sonaipar, which was previously under the South Karimganj constituency, now falls under the Patharkandi constituency after the latest delimitation exercise. This administrative shift has reignited public scrutiny over the performance of political representatives—both past and present.

Former minister and current South Karimganj MLA Siddique Ahmed, who previously represented the area, is now facing questions over the adequacy of development works undertaken during his tenure. Meanwhile, residents are hopeful that Krishnendu Paul, the current MLA and state minister representing Patharkandi, will take cognizance of the situation and initiate immediate action to improve road connectivity in the area.
