Assam Pharmacists’ Union demands action against illegal pharmacies, alleges corruption

All Assam Registered Pharmacists’ Union has demanded immediate government action against illegal pharmacies, warning that they threaten public health and cause significant revenue loss to the state.

Addressing a press conference at Kaliabor Press Club, Union president Dr. Kamal Hassan said illegal pharmacies operate without proper licenses and regulatory oversight, undermining both safety and public trust.

He emphasized that it is mandatory for every pharmacy to prominently display its license and the pharmacist’s registration certificate for public viewing.

Dr. Hassan further alleged large-scale corruption in the Assam Pharmacy Council, describing it as a “sea of corruption.” He accused the council of creating 929 pharmacists through questionable means and collecting ₹30 crore in the process.

The Union also demanded an investigation into SP Medics in Jakhalabandha and its proprietor, citing irregularities. Dr. Hassan stressed that stronger enforcement is necessary to protect citizens from unqualified and unauthorized drug sellers.
