Tata Group plans to establish a mobile manufacturing industry in Assam as part of its second phase of investments in the state, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said during Advantage Assam 2.0 on February 25.
"When he was leaving the hall I asked whether it was going to be second semiconductor, but he said 'Chief Minister, I have in mind to bring the next mobile manufacturing industry to Assam itself,'" Sarma quoted Tata Group Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran as saying.
The mobile manufacturing plant would follow Tata's ongoing semiconductor project in Jagiroad. The combined investments could reach 30,000 crore rupees, positioning Assam as a significant player in India's electronics manufacturing landscape.

This announcement comes amid a wave of major tech investments in the northeastern state. Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani has committed to building an AI data centre in Assam, while HDFC Bank has signed an agreement to establish data centres in the region. Infosys launched its data centre operations in Guwahati just two days ago.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also announced plans for a hyperscale data centre spanning 1 million square feet and unveiled a five-year development plan for Gauhati University.
"These are all pathbreaking developments as far as Assam is concerned," Sarma said. "Until last year or a few years ago, our youth would migrate to other cities for jobs in the AI sector and various IT systems. However, the entire landscape has now changed."
The chief minister noted that these initiatives would generate significant employment opportunities, potentially reversing the brain drain from the state.
