Assam police bust major dacoity gang in Jorabat, nine arrested

A significant breakthrough in Assam's fight against organised crime occurred late last night when police arrested nine members of a gang involved in a string of dacoities and truck hijackings across the state.

The operation, led by Basistha Officer-in-Charge Kapil Pathak, took place around 11 pm on July 23 at 13th Mile in Jorabat. Acting on precise intelligence, a joint team from Basistha and Jorabat police moved swiftly to apprehend the suspects without incident.

Among the items recovered were a truck with no registration plate, three separate number plates, and several tools believed to have been used during the gang’s criminal activities.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Mofidul Ali, Ghaziya Rahman, Samir Ali, and Mominur Ali from Goalpara; Khairul Haque, Niranjan Rabha, and Manjur Ali from Boko; and Fazlul Haque and Mohor Ali from Chaygaon.

Police sources confirm that this gang had been operating for some time and had been previously jailed for similar crimes. Their recent activities had sparked concern among transporters and traders, especially due to their focus on hijacking goods trucks.

Authorities are continuing the investigation to determine the extent of the gang’s operations and possible connections to other criminal networks in the region.
