Assam Police destroys over 10 bighas of illegal poppy plantations near Assam-Bengal border

A joint team comprising the police, excise department, and agriculture department launched a massive operation, resulting in the destruction of over 10 bighas of illegal opium plantations near the Assam-West Bengal border in the char area of Ghulani Tapu.

The operation was carried out in the char areas of the Sankosh River, a region notorious for illegal farming activities. Led by Gosaigaon sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Hiren Kumar Deka, a large police force navigated the challenging river terrain to reach the cultivation site.

Authorities discovered a well-organized network engaged in covert opium farming. Upon arrival, the enforcement team completely eradicated the illicit crops, employing tractors to plow and destroy the fields. Officials estimated that the market value of one kilogram of opium stands at ₹64 lakh, highlighting the scale of the illegal operation.

Following this action, authorities have intensified efforts to identify and apprehend those responsible for the cultivation, with further legal proceedings expected in the coming days.
