In a significant breakthrough against illegal currency networks, the Golakganj police on Thursday, September 4 apprehended a suspected Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) smuggler in the Halakura area of Dhubri district.
The accused, identified as Abu Taher Ali, was arrested during a meticulously planned operation led by officer Debajit Kalita, who was in civilian attire at the time of the raid. Police revealed that the operation was carried out following a specific intelligence input about the suspect’s movement.
Ali was intercepted while traveling in an E-rickshaw, where police discovered counterfeit notes worth ₹1.7 lakh concealed in a specially designed secret chamber beneath the passenger seat. The notes were packed inside a bag to avoid detection.
Authorities believe the arrest could expose a larger smuggling racket operating in the border district, notorious for its proximity to international borders and its vulnerability to illegal trade.
Police have taken Ali into custody, and further interrogation is expected to shed light on possible interstate and cross-border links of the FICN syndicate. Officials stressed that the successful operation underscores the alertness and proactive measures of Golakganj police in combating financial crimes.
Further updates are awaited as investigations continue.
