Assam Police seize heroin worth Rs18 lakh in Samaguri, arrest drug supplier during raid

In a major breakthrough in the fight against narcotics, the Samaguri Police have intercepted a heroin consignment worth nearly Rs18 lakh and arrested a key supplier during a successful anti-drug operation conducted along National Highway 127 in South Bhaleuguri.

Acting on intelligence inputs, police officials stopped a suspicious VIP-marked vehicle—bearing BJP stickers and registration number AS 12 M 6587—which was reportedly transporting heroin from Hojai to Tezpur. Upon inspection, authorities discovered 30 soap cases packed with the banned substance.

The arrested individual has been identified as Nazrul Islam, who was allegedly in charge of smuggling the narcotics consignment. According to police sources, the seized heroin has an estimated market value of approximately Rs18 lakh.

This interception marks a significant step in curbing narcotic trafficking along Assam's highway routes and raises concerns about the misuse of political and VIP vehicle identifiers to smuggle illegal substances.

Police have confirmed that further investigations are underway to uncover the broader network involved in the smuggling operation.
