Assam police seize over four tonnes of illegal betel nut in major crackdown, one arrested

A late-night operation in Assam’s Bajali district on November 14 led to the seizure of more than four tonnes of suspected Burmese-origin betel nut, marking one of the region’s significant crackdowns on illicit cross-border trade.

Police set up a checkpoint at Bhawanipur after receiving intelligence on the movement of a truck allegedly transporting contraband.

Officers intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number AS26AC0443 and discovered concealed chambers inside the truck. A full search conducted under legal procedures resulted in the recovery of 4,296 kg of betel nut, which officers believe was smuggled into the state.

The truck’s driver, Sanidul Islam, and handyman, Rajibul Islam—both residents of Barpeta district—were detained for questioning. Preliminary findings indicate the consignment originated in Imphal, entered Assam through Merapani in Golaghat district, and was en route to a warehouse in Kaljhar, Barpeta.

Investigators identified the alleged organiser behind the operation, prompting a police team to pursue the suspect. In a subsequent development, officers confirmed the arrest of the main accused, Aainal Haque, who is believed to have coordinated the shipment.

Police say further investigation is underway to determine the scale of the network and possible links to other smuggling routes.
