In the largest gold seizure made by Assam Police to date, Guwahati Police recovered 37.064 kg of yellow metal suspected to be gold, valued at more than Rs 54 crore, during a raid in the Kharghuli area of the city. Authorities also seized 13 grams of silver nodules/flakes.
The operation was carried out by Latasil Police Station based on intelligence inputs from the Special Operations Group (SOG), Guwahati Police Commissionerate, during the night of June 29–30.
Police arrested Akshay Bansode (32), a native of Sangli district in Maharashtra, who was reportedly staying in Gandhibasti, Guwahati. The case has been registered as Latasil Police Station Case No. 42/2026.
Apart from the suspected gold and silver, police also seized four mobile phones, Rs 3,755 in cash, and bags allegedly used to conceal the consignment.
According to Guwahati Police, preliminary investigation has revealed suspected links to an international gold smuggling network involving the Middle East and Myanmar, along with domestic connections in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Bengaluru.
Police said the accused failed to produce any legal documents for the seized consignment. He remains in custody while investigators continue to probe the wider smuggling syndicate, including its financial trail and previous consignments.
