Assam: Police vehicle damaged, 5 personnel injured in Nagaon mob attack

Five police personnel, including the officer-in-charge of Khatowal Police Station, were injured after a group of people allegedly attacked a police team during an operation to locate a man wanted in connection with a police complaint in Assam's Nagaon district, officials said.

The incident took place at Geruaati when the police team, acting on directions from the office of the Nagaon Senior Superintendent of Police, went to the residence of Rashidul Haque after he allegedly failed to respond to repeated summons to appear at the police station.

According to police, a tense situation developed during the operation, following which family members of Haque allegedly attacked the personnel and damaged the police vehicle. Haque and several others allegedly involved in the incident fled the spot amid the commotion.

Khatowal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Bishnu Deuri, Head Constable Azgar Ali, Naik Aridul Islam, Lance Naik Jahangir Ahmed and police vehicle driver Sahil Ahmed sustained injuries in the alleged attack.

Police subsequently detained several people in connection with the incident, including Haque's mother, Hazara Khatun, and two others identified as Imam Hussain and Mahidul Islam.

Haque had allegedly been summoned to the police station several times in connection with a complaint but did not appear before the police, according to reports.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault on the team and the damage to the official vehicle. Haque has also previously faced allegations of involvement in cattle smuggling.
