Assam polling percentage likely to reach 86–87 per cent: Himanta Biswa Sarma highlights changing trends
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, April 9 said that voter turnout patterns in Assam reflected increased participation across communities, with overall polling likely to reach between 86 and 87 per cent.
Addressing reporters, the Chief Minister stated that in previous elections, sections of the Muslim community of Bangladeshi origin recorded voter turnout as high as 95 to 96 per cent, while turnout among other sections of Assamese society remained around 75 to 76 per cent.
He noted that the current election witnessed a more balanced participation, with both groups turning out in large numbers. According to him, communities that have traditionally shown high electoral participation continued to vote in significant numbers, while those with comparatively lower turnout in the past also displayed increased enthusiasm this time.
Sarma said that it would be premature to comment on the outcome of the election but added that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance could potentially achieve a strong mandate.
He indicated that crossing the triple-digit mark in seat share would not be unexpected.
