Assam polls: Baby Begum launches Dhubri campaign with show of strength despite Congress rift
Defying internal friction within the party, Congress candidate Baby Begum on March 20 kicked off her campaign for Assam’s Dhubri assembly seat with a high-decibel roadshow that disrupted traffic across key parts of the town.
The rally, seen as an attempt to project unity after her selection by the party leadership, began from DK Road and moved through several busy stretches of Dhubri, drawing a sizeable turnout of party workers and supporters.
A long convoy of vehicles, including cars and motorcycles carrying Congress flags and posters, accompanied the candidate. Baby Begum was seen atop an open-roof vehicle, greeting residents and supporters as the procession passed through the town centre.
Party insiders indicated that the show of strength was aimed at consolidating support at a time when sections within the local unit have expressed discontent over the choice of candidate.
Addressing workers at the party office after the rally, Begum underlined her long association with the Congress and called for unity ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. She urged party members to move beyond differences and focus on the electoral contest against the BJP and the AIUDF.
“This ticket belongs to every woman and every loyal worker of Dhubri. We will fight this election on the ground, not through rumours,” she said.
The campaign launch marks the beginning of what is expected to be a closely watched contest in Dhubri, a constituency where both the BJP and AIUDF are expected to put up a strong fight.
