Assam polls: BJP workers injured in alleged knife attack in Sonitpur’s Naduar
A serious incident of alleged political violence was reported from the Naduar Assembly constituency in Assam’s Sonitpur district, where several BJP workers were injured in an attack at Tupia area.
According to allegations, former MLA Praneswar Basumatary attempted to attack a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker with a knife.
Local sources claimed that Basumatary suddenly lunged at the worker and tried to stab him using a knife concealed inside his jacket. The attack is suspected to have been premeditated.
Reports indicate that four to five BJP workers sustained injuries in the incident. They were rushed to the Tezpur Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Several others have also been accused of assisting in the attack, including individuals identified as Amrit Hazarika of Dikrai Tea Estate, Ribu Dey of Tupia, Deepak Bhandari of Marisuti, and Khemraj Chhetri of Bagabil.
Following the incident, tension spread across the area. Police and personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) reached the spot and managed to bring the situation under control.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident further amid heightened political sensitivity in the run-up to the elections.
