Assam: Pregnant woman carried on bamboo stretcher to hospital amid poor road condition in Sribhumi
In a distressing incident that highlights the grim state of rural infrastructure, a pregnant woman from Damsara, under the Ramakrishnanagar constituency of Sribhumi district, Assam was carried to the hospital on a bamboo stretcher after an ambulance failed to reach her due to the deplorable condition of the road.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism over the region’s poor connectivity and lack of development. The muddy, uneven track leading to the village has deteriorated so severely that it can hardly be called a road, locals said.
With no vehicle able to navigate the area, villagers constructed a makeshift bamboo stretcher and carried the expectant mother on their shoulders for several kilometres to access medical care.
Residents expressed deep frustration, pointing out that despite Ramakrishnanagar’s MLA being from the BJP and the MP of Sribhumi representing Vidyanagar, Ratabari, no visible efforts have been made to improve the village’s infrastructure.
“The situation becomes unbearable during emergencies. We are left helpless,” said a local resident, adding that repeated appeals to authorities have gone unanswered.
