Assam: Protest erupts in Cachar over Waqf Amendment Bill, memorandum submitted to President

A wave of protest swept through Sonai in Assam’s Cachar district on Saturday, April 5 as multiple organizations came together to demand the immediate withdrawal of the Waqf Amendment Bill. The demonstration saw participation from various groups, including members of the Owaisi Fans Club.

Tensions escalated when protestors attempted to stage a march, which was promptly stopped by local police. Undeterred, the demonstrators regrouped at the Sonai Football Ground, where they carried out a peaceful yet vociferous protest, voicing strong disapproval of the proposed legislation.

The agitators accused the government of undermining minority rights and raised slogans condemning the bill. The protest culminated with the submission of a memorandum addressed to the President of India, urging the immediate scrapping of the Waqf Amendment Bill.

Authorities maintained a strong security presence to prevent any disruption, and the event concluded without any reported incidents of violence.
