Assam: Protesters block NH near Doomdooma, demands compensation for accident victims

The national highway near Doomdooma faced blockades as protesters demanded compensation for Sanjeev Chetry who killed in a recent accident. Sanjeev Chetry was a laborer, lost his life while working on April 23, prompting demands for proper compensation for the deceased and support for their families.

The Gorsha Students' Union joined the call for compensation, advocating for the affected families in collaboration with the Gorkha community. Sushil Agarwal's tea factory in Mankhowa became the focal point of the protest with accusations leveled against the owner for neglecting compensation responsibilities and operational matters.

Revenue Circle Officer from Doomdooma intervened in the situation, arriving at the blockade site to engage in discussions with the protesters. However, talks were adjourned amidst ongoing tensions.

The tragic incident occurred on April 23 when Sanjeev Chettri, while working at Sushil Agarwal's business establishment, was struck by a tree branch during a windstorm, resulting in his demise. Despite the passage of nearly 20-22 hours since the incident, Agarwal did not extend condolences to Chetry’s family, causing outrage among locals.

Chettri was a sole breadearner supporting his family and educating his children, underscores the gravity of the loss. Protesters are urging both the government and Agarwal to provide financial assistance to ensure the survival of Chettri's family.
The blockade and protests highlight the community's demand for justice and accountability in the aftermath of the tragic accident, emphasizing the need for swift action to address the grievances of the affected families.
