Amidst growing discontent over smart electricity meters and rising bills, residents in Margherita voiced strong opposition to the implementation of smart meters by the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL). Residents accuse these meters of burdening them with exorbitant electricity bills, leading to widespread dissatisfaction.
Despite the rising anger, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's administration has remained optimistic about the benefits of the reverse smart meters, as reflected in the supportive tone often adopted by journalists. However, many customers argue that the steep increase in electricity costs due to these meters is overwhelming. The issue has sparked protests across the region, with critics accusing the government of introducing smart meters without adequately addressing the ongoing price hikes in basic utilities.
