A wave of public outrage erupted in Boko, Assam after a particular road in Chilarai Nagar was abruptly closed for construction by a contractor under the Public Works Department (PWD Roads), without issuing any prior public notification or creating alternate routes for commuters.
The closure, which took place on Saturday, June 14 near the Boko-Chaygaon Territorial Road Sub-Division office, has severely impacted local movement and triggered concerns over public safety and access to essential services. The 500-meter-long and 3-meter-wide road links the Boko-Chamaria road with the Boko Railway Station road and provides vital connectivity to several government offices including Irrigation, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Agriculture, and Electricity departments. Additionally, a pre-nursery school run by Boko Matri Samaj and Boko Girls’ School are situated along the same stretch.
Residents, particularly daily commuters, expressed anger over the unannounced shutdown, alleging that the contractor and PWD engineers violated public rights. They emphasized that while local residents might be familiar with alternate footpaths or lanes, people coming from nearby villages—especially to pay electricity bills or visit government offices—would face significant inconvenience.
"This sudden roadblock is not only causing trouble but poses a threat in case of emergencies. If someone needs to reach the hospital or any of the offices urgently, this could cost lives," said a local resident.
When questioned, officials from the Boko Sub-Division PWD office acknowledged the issue and stated that they are reviewing the situation and working on a solution to ensure access for locals and officegoers.
Residents further blamed the disruption on the inefficiency and unprofessional conduct of the contractor involved in the roadwork. They also criticized the lack of planning in executing the project without ensuring minimal disturbance to the public.
The PWD has assured the community that necessary measures will be taken to address the grievances and restore connectivity with appropriate alternatives during the construction phase.
