Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi announced youth leader Rahul Chetry as the party’s official candidate from the Margherita constituency for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
Addressing a charged gathering in Margherita on Saturday, Gogoi launched a blistering attack on the sitting BJP MLA Bhaskar Sarma, alleging rampant corruption and administrative failure. “The current MLA has done nothing for the people. He is corrupt, unaccountable, and behaves more like a gambler than a public servant,” Gogoi remarked, drawing resounding applause from the crowd.
Gogoi went on to highlight the credentials of the newly announced candidate, stating, “Rahul Chetry is among the most capable youth leaders we have. As a former General Secretary of the Dibrugarh University Students’ Union, he has proven his commitment to leadership and people’s issues. We believe he can usher in real change in Margherita.”
He also acknowledged the groundwork already laid by Raijor Dal in the constituency under the leadership of Rupam Ghosh. “We have worked tirelessly in Margherita over the last few months. The decision to field Rahul Chetry is a result of this groundwork and the trust we’ve built with the people,” Gogoi said. “We have taken a pledge — we will defeat Bhaskar Sarma and the BJP here.”
The Raijor Dal leader also presented a four-point development agenda, pledging the following reforms if voted to power:
Land Pattas for All – “We will ensure every family, particularly from indigenous communities, receives legal land rights.”
Dignified Wages for Tea Garden Workers – “Tea workers have suffered for too long. Fair and respectful wages will be guaranteed.”
Year-Round Irrigation for Farmers – “We will provide consistent irrigation facilities so agriculture becomes sustainable across seasons.”
Village-Based Employment Generation – “We will establish small-scale industries in every village so that youth no longer have to migrate for jobs. They will find prosperity here, at home.”
Concluding his speech, Gogoi declared, “The people of Margherita are hungry for change, and we are prepared to deliver it.”
