Assam: Rape accused injured in police encounter during escape bid in Kokrajhar, two cops hurt

Kokrajhar witnessed a dramatic turn in the ongoing rape case investigation on Sunday, January 11 evening when the accused, Rafikul Islam, was injured in a police encounter after allegedly attempting to escape from custody. Two Kokrajhar police personnel also sustained injuries during the incident, further escalating tensions in the district.

According to official sources, Rafikul Islam, who had been kept under police watch in the Ranighuli area following heightened tensions on Saturday, was being escorted to Kokrajhar when the incident occurred. During the transit, the accused allegedly sought permission to use the toilet and, taking advantage of the situation, attempted to snatch a weapon from the accompanying police personnel.

In the ensuing struggle, Rafikul reportedly attacked the police team and made an attempt to flee. The situation prompted the police to open fire in self-defence, resulting in Rafikul Islam sustaining a bullet injury to his left leg.

Two police personnel were injured in the confrontation, suffering wounds to their hands and legs. They were immediately provided medical assistance.

Following the encounter, the injured accused was rushed to Kokrajhar RNB Civil Hospital, where he received preliminary treatment. However, considering the nature of his injuries, doctors later referred him to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital for advanced medical care.

Police officials have stated that the situation is under control and further investigation into the incident is underway. Security has been tightened in Kokrajhar amid public outrage over the rape case and the subsequent developments.
