Assam: Rescue efforts underway in Sribhumi as boats deployed for evacuation amid torrential rain

Continuous and intense rainfall over the past several days has plunged Sribhumi town into a state of emergency, with nearly all major streets under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department inundated. The severe waterlogging has paralyzed normal life, with emergency teams mobilized for relief efforts.

Boats have become the primary mode of transport and rescue across the flooded localities, as water levels have rendered roadways impassable. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), in coordination with a local non-governmental organization, has been actively involved in ferrying stranded residents to safer locations using boats.

Several families, especially from low-lying areas, have begun evacuating their homes in search of temporary shelters as fears of rising water levels continue to grow. The situation has raised alarm over the apparent lack of preparedness and proactive infrastructure planning by the Sribhumi Municipal Board.

Speaking to the media, a volunteer from the assisting NGO expressed frustration, stating, “This crisis is not new. Every year, the town suffers severe flooding due to the negligence and short-sightedness of the municipal authorities. The issue demands urgent, long-term intervention.”

As rescue efforts continue, citizens are urging the local administration to implement permanent flood mitigation strategies and improve urban drainage infrastructure to prevent recurrence of such disasters.
