Assam: Roads blocked, slogans raised against BTR government over bridge collapse in Baksa

The United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) government in BTR (Bodoland Territorial Region) is facing mounting criticism, as protests erupted in Baksa, with slogans targeting local MLA Urkhao Goura Brahma and the ruling administration.

Hundreds of agitated residents took to the streets, blocking roads in protest against the deteriorating infrastructure and the government's perceived inaction.

A particularly shocking sight that has sparked this unrest is the collapse of a crucial bridge, leaving several villages in the region dangerously cut off. The collapse has not only disrupted the movement of four-wheelers but also posed significant challenges for pedestrians and cyclists.

Protesters expressed deep dissatisfaction with MLA U.G. Brahma's three-year tenure, accusing him of failing to deliver any meaningful development in the Chapaguri constituency. “In these three years, we have received nothing but hollow promises," said a local protester, frustrated by the lack of progress.

The collapse of the road connecting Dumuni and Daodhara in Baksa district has further aggravated the situation. A large pit has formed due to erosion, rendering the road unsafe for vehicles, and now only bicycles can precariously navigate the route. Pedestrians face serious safety risks as they traverse the damaged road.

Angry chants such as "Pramod Boro Hai Hai," "Urkhao Gaura Brahma Hai Hai," and "UPPL Government Has No Work" reverberated through the air, with the protesters demanding immediate action to repair the road and restore the disrupted transport system.

Many drew a sharp contrast between BTR Chief Pramod Boro’s ambitious vision for the region, sarcastically referred to as "Switzerland," and the grim reality on the ground. While the government boasted of development, the local population felt abandoned, their frustrations boiling over into public demonstrations.

The protestors have called on the Pramod Boro-led Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) government to address the situation promptly, urging swift action to repair the collapsed bridge and ensure safe passage for vehicles and pedestrians alike. Anger also flared at Urkhao Goura Brahma, a minister elected from the Chapaguri constituency, as locals voiced their disappointment over his perceived inability to address the constituency’s pressing needs.
