Assam: Rs 55 crore worth of narcotics destroyed in Sribhumi, major blow to drug network

The Sribhumi Police on Tuesday, January 20 destroyed prohibited drugs worth over Rs 55.53 crore, delivering a major blow to drug trafficking networks operating in the district. The massive consignment of narcotic substances, seized during multiple anti-drug operations, was destroyed in compliance with court directives and under strict official supervision.

The large-scale drug destruction programme was conducted at a brick kiln in the Sharifnagar area of Sribhumi, where the contraband was systematically disposed of following standard safety protocols. The narcotics had been seized earlier from various police stations across the district as part of an intensified campaign against drug peddling.

According to police records, the destroyed drugs were recovered from 131 drug traffickers during 81 separate operations, underscoring the scale of enforcement action undertaken by the district police. The haul included highly addictive substances such as heroin, brown sugar, yaba tablets, codeine-based cough syrup, and ganja.

The destruction process was carried out in the presence of senior officials from both the police and district administration to ensure transparency and adherence to legal procedures. Among those present were Deputy Inspector General of Police Jayshree Khersa and Senior Superintendent of Police Leena Doley, along with other senior officers.

Speaking on the occasion, SSP Leena Doley reiterated the district police’s zero-tolerance approach towards narcotics and reaffirmed their commitment to dismantling drug networks at every level. She stated that the police would continue aggressive enforcement, intelligence-led operations, and community outreach to keep Sribhumi drug-free.
