The foundation stone laying ceremony for a multi-crore water supply project was laid today, July 27 at the old water treatment plant site along Longai Road. The project aims to provide round-the-clock safe drinking water to 27 municipal wards in the town, marking a significant step toward infrastructure development under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah officiated the ceremony, accompanied by Barak Valley ministers Krishnendu Paul and Kaushik Rai, former Rajya Sabha MP Mission Ranjan Das, the District Commissioner, and senior officials from various departments.
However, the event was marred by a noticeable lapse in protocol as local MLA Kamalakha Dey Purkayastha, former MP Mission Ranjan Das, and even the District Commissioner reportedly could not find designated seating during the official function, raising eyebrows over event coordination.
Following the stone-laying event, all three ministers participated in a separate programme at the district library auditorium, where they joined others to listen to the Prime Minister’s Mann Ki Baat broadcast.
Speaking to the media, Minister Mallabaruah informed that the water supply project is expected to be completed within three years. Once operational, it will ensure uninterrupted clean water access to a significant portion of the urban population.
He also provided updates on the Jal Jeevan Mission, stating that 14,000 out of 29,000 planned projects across the state have been completed. However, several works are still pending due to delays in fund disbursement, with contractors yet to receive payments.
