In a tragic incident in Baihata Chariali, Kamrup, one person lost his life when a section of an under-construction flyover collapsed. The fatal accident occurred on the Baihata bypass of National Highway 27.
The construction site witnessed the collapse of a beam from the top of the flyover, leading to the unfortunate demise of an individual. The beams, which proved to be overweight, were reportedly supported by wooden structures.
The deceased, identified as a resident of Khandikar in Rangia, earned his livelihood by selling nuts in buses. The innocent victim met with a tragic fate at Theta, where the under-construction flyover suffered a catastrophic failure.
The incident has prompted public protests, resulting in the closure of the road from Tezpur to Guwahati via Nalbari Mangad. The local community is grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event, shedding light on the safety concerns surrounding the ongoing construction of the flyover.
A local resident expressed, "The laborers involved in the bridge construction completely disregard rules and regulations. They show no concern for safety, neither for themselves nor the public. They were lifting the beam without following any safety measures, and suddenly, it collapsed with people below. Unfortunately, one person lost their life, and a dumper was also damaged. The work is being carried out without proper adherence to safety protocols”
Authorities are expected to launch investigations into the circumstances leading to the collapse, with the incident serving as a poignant reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in construction projects to prevent such tragic accidents.
