Assam: Seven missing after boat capsizes in Brahmaputra, rescue operations underway in Chenga

Panic gripped the Rahampur area of Chenga under Barpeta district of Assam on Tuesday, January 27, after a passenger boat capsized in the Brahmaputra River, leaving at least seven passengers feared missing. The incident has once again brought the spotlight on persistent safety lapses and regulatory failures in river transport across Assam.

According to preliminary reports, the passenger boat overturned suddenly while ferrying commuters across the river. Rescue efforts were immediately initiated, but several passengers are yet to be traced, triggering scenes of distress and desperation along the riverbanks.

Sources alleged that the vessel was being operated in a grossly negligent manner, with passengers reportedly not provided with life jackets. Ignoring the strong river currents is also suspected to have contributed to the accident, raising serious questions about compliance with basic safety norms.

In the aftermath of the mishap, heart-rending scenes unfolded at the ghats as families and locals gathered, anxiously awaiting news of their missing loved ones. The atmosphere remained tense as rescue operations continued into the day.

Notably, concerns over unsafe practices, overcrowding and violations of safety regulations by boat operators on the Brahmaputra have been repeatedly flagged in the past. Despite multiple warnings and reports, enforcement by the concerned authorities has remained weak, allowing unsafe river travel to continue unchecked.

The latest incident has once again exposed the vulnerability of innocent passengers who depend on river transport for daily commute, particularly in riverine regions.

Rescue teams, assisted by local fishermen, are currently conducting extensive search operations in the river. However, officials said that no confirmed information about the missing passengers has been received so far.
