Assam: Severe erosion and rising floodwaters wreak havoc in Bongaigaon's Dhalagasa, Ghoramara

Severe river erosion and rising floodwaters have triggered a crisis in Dhalagasa and Ghoramara villages under the Srijangram Assembly constituency in Assam's Bongaigaon district.

Residents said the water level at the confluence of the Aie and Manah rivers began rising rapidly from Saturday morning, with erosion intensifying and swallowing residential land.

Several families were caught off guard as floodwaters reached their homesteads early in the day, leaving them with little or no time to dismantle or shift their houses before they were affected by the erosion.

The rising waters have also submerged large stretches of agricultural land, causing significant losses to farmers. Victims said the flood situation has made it extremely difficult to salvage belongings or relocate to safer places.

Affected residents alleged that despite the worsening situation, they have not received adequate attention from local authorities. They also expressed dissatisfaction over the response from MP Rakibul Hussain, MLA Nurul Islam, and the district administration.

The affected families have appealed to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to intervene and provide immediate relief, erosion control measures, and rehabilitation assistance.
