Assam: Shock over elderly woman’s death as body found locked inside house in Sribhumi

A sense of shock and outrage prevailed in Sribhumi, Assam after the body of a 60-year-old woman was found locked inside her residence on Neelmani Path on Tuesday, December 16.

The deceased has been identified as Shreyasi Roy, a resident of the area, who was reportedly mentally unstable and had been suffering from illness. According to local residents, after learning about her death, her close relatives arrived at the house, placed tulsi leaves on her eyes as part of ritual practices, locked the house, and left the premises.

As the body remained confined inside the locked house until nightfall, panic and suspicion spread among neighbours, prompting them to alert the police. Acting on the information, police reached the spot, broke open the house, recovered the body, and sent it to Sribhumi Civil Hospital for further procedures.

The alleged conduct of the deceased’s relatives has triggered widespread resentment and raised serious questions, with the incident causing considerable unrest in the locality. Police have initiated further inquiry into the matter.
