Assam: Shopkeepers protest against municipal crackdown in Dhubri
Dhubri's Chawk Bazar shopkeepers have shut down their businesses in protest against what they call unfair enforcement by the municipal board. The move comes just days before Holi, one of the busiest shopping seasons, leaving traders and customers in distress.
The dispute stems from the municipal board’s sudden action against minor shopfront extensions in Chawk Bazar. However, traders argue that while authorities are focused on their market, they have ignored severe congestion caused by vegetable vendors in nearby New Market and Hilal Market. Shopkeepers allege that these areas are nearly impassable due to vendors occupying entire roads, yet no action has been taken.
“This is blatant discrimination. The roads in New Market and Hilal Market are blocked entirely, but officials are only targeting us,” said one protesting shopkeeper.
The issue has gained traction among local residents, who see the crackdown as an example of selective governance. Many question why enforcement is being applied unevenly, especially when other areas face more severe traffic and encroachment problems.
The situation is particularly chaotic on Thursdays, the town’s designated "Haat day," when a surge of shoppers floods the markets. Traders argue that instead of addressing overall urban congestion, authorities are unfairly penalizing specific businesses.
With Holi approaching, shopkeepers fear heavy financial losses, adding to their frustration. The business community is demanding a transparent and fair approach from the municipal board to ensure equal enforcement across all markets.
