Assam: Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park inaugurated in Kokrajhar on World Environment Day

In a landmark move to bolster biodiversity conservation and eco-tourism in Assam, the newly designated Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park was officially inaugurated on Thursday in the Kokrajhar district, aligning with the global observance of World Environment Day.

Strategically located along the Indo-Bhutan border, the 316-square-kilometer expanse of the national park is a biodiversity hotspot, especially noted for its extraordinary array of butterfly species. The park's formal launch was led by Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pramod Boro, with Assam Cabinet Minister Urkhao Gwra Brahma also in attendance.

Calling it a "historic milestone for Bodoland, Assam, and India," CEM Boro underscored the park’s role in safeguarding ecologically sensitive areas while promoting responsible tourism and research. “The creation of Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park significantly strengthens our mission to conserve Assam’s unique flora and fauna,” Boro stated during his address.

A major highlight of the day was the inauguration of the North East India Butterfly Museum and Conservation & Research Centre at Ultapani, located within the park's jurisdiction. Jointly inaugurated by CEM Boro and Minister Brahma, the center is the first of its kind in the region and is envisioned as a premier hub for ecological education, species preservation, and scientific research.

Home to nearly 200 butterfly species, the museum aims to spotlight the lesser-known yet vital role of these insects in maintaining ecosystem health. It is also expected to become a significant attraction for researchers, students, and eco-tourists from across the country and abroad.

Authorities hope the dual initiatives—the national park and the butterfly center—will drive forward conservation agendas while providing economic opportunities for local communities through sustainable tourism.
