Assam: Silchar tense as protesters allege fake certificates used by newly elected municipal councillors

Tension prevailed outside the District Sports Association (DSA) in Assam's Silchar on Thursday, November 5 as protesters staged a demonstration against newly elected councillors of the Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC), alleging that some of them had contested and won the municipal elections using forged certificates.

The protest took place on the day the newly elected municipal councillors were scheduled to take oath. The demonstrators alleged that several candidates had secured electoral victories by submitting fake certificates and questioned the administration's failure to act despite complaints being lodged over the alleged irregularities.

Raising concerns over the alleged use of forged documents in the municipal elections, the protesters demanded action against the councillors concerned. They gathered outside the DSA and planned to proceed towards the oath-taking venue to register their opposition.

However, police personnel stopped the demonstrators outside the DSA and prevented them from moving towards the ceremony venue.

The police intervention triggered a heated exchange between the protesters and security personnel, with demonstrators expressing anger over being denied access to the venue. The situation remained tense outside the DSA for some time.
