Assam: Silchar votes in first municipal corporation election, 131 candidates in fray

Polling is underway in the first-ever Silchar Municipal Corporation election since the town was upgraded from a municipal board to a municipal corporation, with around 2.7 lakh voters eligible to cast their votes across 40 wards on Saturday, October 3.

The Silchar Municipal Corporation comprises 42 wards. BJP candidates have already been elected unopposed in two wards, leaving 40 wards where polling is being held.

A total of 131 candidates are contesting the election across the 40 wards. Voting is being conducted at 303 polling stations across the municipal corporation area.

The district administration has made arrangements for the smooth conduct of polling and has put in place additional measures to maintain law and order and ensure that voting takes place peacefully and without disruption.

The election marks a significant civic milestone for Silchar as voters elect representatives to the newly constituted municipal corporation for the first time.
