Umar Faruk, a local tea seller, stood silently with tape over his mouth and a placard in hand at a busy petrol pump point in Karimganj city. His quiet but powerful demonstration is a response to the recent assault and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College.
Faruk, who views doctors as "angels" of society, has been deeply moved by the tragic incident that has ignited nationwide outrage. In his protest, which lasted several hours, Faruk stated the need for justice and highlighted the growing concern over the safety of healthcare professionals.
Meanwhile, amid the nationwide protests and agitation over the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata, the West Bengal Health and Family Welfare Department has rescinded the transfer orders of 42 doctors. Additionally, the Kolkata police have imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS around the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for seven days, starting from Sunday (August 18, 2024), to prevent unlawful assembly.
In another development, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was questioned by the CBI for several hours on Saturday. This was the second consecutive day of questioning, focusing on his whereabouts on the night of the postgraduate trainee's death, the call he received from her, and his initial response to the incident. The ongoing investigation underscores the gravity of the case and the authorities' commitment to uncovering the truth.
