Assam: Sit-in Jalmitra strike in Bajali demands fair wages and job security
Bajali district's Jalmitras, appointed in 2022 to support water supply systems, staged a sit-in strike in front of the Bajali division office, expressing their discontent with the divisional minister and the government.
Organized under the All Assam PHC Temporary Labour Employees Council, the protest highlighted grievances over inadequate compensation and lack of job security.
The Jalmitras, who currently receive a mere Rs 216 as a daily allowance, stated that managing their families with an approximate monthly income of Rs 6,000 is exceedingly difficult. Many of them are required to perform additional roles such as chowkidars and electricians, further straining their resources.
Protesters demanded departmental recruitment, adherence to government labour laws for wages, and an end to employment under user committees. They also urged the authorities to provide job stability and safeguard the future of their families.
