The Achep tribal community of Sribhumi continues to preserve a unique and centuries-old tradition of Durga Puja, one that stands apart from the more common celebrations marked by grandeur and elaborate pandals.
Observed from Saptami to Navami, this puja — believed to be nearly 1,300 years old — is celebrated without idols, decorative structures, or lavish festivities. Instead, the sanctum is constructed using banana trees, and the rituals are performed with deep spiritual fervor. Despite its simplicity, the celebration draws thousands of devotees who come to witness this rare and sacred tradition.
The puja, held at Manikbond in Patharkandi constituency of Sribhumi district, is not confined to the Achep community alone. People from different backgrounds, including the Charai community, actively take part, reflecting the celebration’s inclusive and multi-cultural essence.
Offerings and bhog served on banana leaves, the rhythmic sounds of dhols and drums, and hymns sung in praise of Goddess Durga form the heart of this unique worship. For the locals, the puja is not just a religious ritual but also a symbol of unity, cultural harmony, and collective devotion.
Community elders affirm that the Achep Puja remains an integral part of their identity and continues to inspire younger generations to uphold the values of faith and togetherness.
