Assam: Sribhumi's Namasudra community calls for unity ahead of 2026 Assembly elections

As the 2026 Assembly elections draw near, leaders and representatives of the Scheduled Communities are calling for greater unity to ensure stronger political representation. In the Ramkrishnanagar Assembly constituency of Sri Bhumi district, the Scheduled Communities collectively hold around 25,000 votes, a crucial factor that could impact the re-election prospects of sitting BJP MLA Vijay Malakar.

To strengthen their political influence, various Scheduled Caste groups have been organizing community meetings in Ratabari. Following a conference held by the Pathni community last month, the Namasudra community recently convened a large-scale gathering in the remote Cheragi region. The event witnessed thousands of attendees assembling in open farmlands to discuss their collective future.

Addressing the gathering, a community spokesperson highlighted the absence of a strong political leader representing the Namasudra community. He stressed that this lack of leadership has led to setbacks in political, economic, and social advancement.

"We remain politically sidelined because we are not united. Our strength lies in unity," he stated. The conference participants urged the community to rally behind any candidate nominated from their group in the 2026 elections. They also emphasized the importance of promoting education among women to drive overall community progress.

The conference commenced with tributes to Guru Harichand and Guru Guruchand Thakur, esteemed figures of the Namasudra community. Attendees reaffirmed their commitment to their teachings and resolved to work collectively for the upliftment of their people.
