Assam: Stones hurled, police convoy attacked after 5 accused in Zubeen Garg case brought to Baksa Jail

Tension gripped the premises of Baksa District Jail on Wednesday, October 15 afternoon as five accused in the mysterious death case of Assam’s music icon, late Zubeen Garg, including Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma, were brought to the facility under heavy security.

A large convoy of police vehicles escorted the accused to the jail amid tight surveillance. However, as the vehicles arrived, a group of irate locals gathered near the entrance, hurling stones and objects at the convoy in a sudden outburst of anger. The attack left a female police officer injured, while the glass panes of one police vehicle were reportedly shattered.

Security personnel immediately swung into action, detaining several protesters to prevent further escalation. The agitated crowd demanded that Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma be presented before the public.

Inside and outside the jail, an extensive security cordon was put in place. Police officers used batons to disperse the mob, ensuring the safe transfer of the accused into custody.

Along with Mahanta and Sharma, the other three accused,  Sandeepan Garg, Nandeshwar Bora, and Paresh Baishya, were also lodged inside the high-security facility. All five are now being kept under strict surveillance and special security arrangements within the newly upgraded jail complex.

District authorities have confirmed that the situation remains tense but under control, with additional forces deployed in and around the jail premises to prevent further unrest.
