Assam: Student body condemns fatal attack on student leader Madhurya Barman, pays tribute in Kaliabor
A condolence and tribute programme was organised by the Kaliabor Regional Students' Union on Monday, June 1 evening in memory of student leader Madhurjya Barman, who was killed in a brutal attack in Assam's Nalbari district.
The programme was held at the office of the students' union, where members paid homage to the deceased student leader and observed a moment of silence in his memory. The organisation also strongly condemned the attack and prayed for the eternal peace of Barman's soul.
Madhurjya Barman, 19, a resident of Balipathar in Chamata, served as the Assistant General Secretary of the West Nalbari Regional Students' Union. He lost his life in an alleged attack that took place late on the night of May 30 at Gangapur under Mukalmua in Nalbari district.
According to reports, Barman and 18-year-old Mridumudra Deka of Gangapur were travelling on a scooter when they were allegedly attacked. Barman succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while Deka sustained serious injuries and was rushed for medical treatment.
The injured teenager is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Hospital sources have stated that her condition remains critical.
Local sources said the victims were returning home from Nalbari town when the incident occurred. Both were reportedly found on the roadside with multiple injuries.
The case triggered widespread public outrage and concern across Assam, leading to demands for swift action against those responsible. While some groups attempted to link the incident to allegations of "love jihad," police have not officially confirmed any such motive.
In a significant development in the case, the prime accused, Roz Ali, was reportedly killed during a police encounter conducted by Assam Police in Mukalmua following an intensive search operation.
Police have stated that the investigation remains ongoing and that efforts are underway to establish the exact sequence of events and ascertain the motive behind the attack. Further details are awaited.
Members of the Kaliabor Regional Students' Union expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and reiterated their demand for justice while remembering Barman's contributions as a student leader.
